“We read books to find out who we are. What other people, real or imaginary, do and think and feel… is an essential guide to our understanding of what we ourselves are and may become.”
― Ursula K. Le Guin
#BiteSizeMemoir prompt from Lisa Reiter at Sharing the Story asked that we “Write about our Holiday Reads” and I am not a typical holiday reader. At least I don’t think so. Most people find a good novel they can get lost in, me I bring along books I am currently working through that will help me better understand myself, deepen my spirituality, or enhance my writing abilities. It isn’t that I don’t like to read novels, I do, but when I’m on vacation, I tend to use that time to deepen my spiritual experiences through contemplating what I’m reading, journaling, and soaking in the renewing energies of where I am (typically near a body of water, preferably an ocean). I am late in sharing my BiteSizeMemoir and it seems that poetry once again insists on coming to the page. Oh and here is a favorite poem I wrote about my love for books for one of the A to Z challenges, A to Z Poetry – Reading
Sitting under the shade of my umbrella
Lying on my blanket with my books
reading and listening to the waves
I ponder words of
spirit, love, understanding and forgiveness
I try to let go of anger as I soak in the sea salt air
anger that is ever under the surface
waiting to unleash its wrath
waiting to sabotage myself and those around me
reading to learn to let go
reading to learn to love myself again
reading to learn to lighten up
reading books such as
The Bond Between Women
The Language of Love
Real Magic and
Now it’s your turn, what do you take to read on your vacation?
